What is Brainspotting?
Have you ever noticed where you look while thinking about a memory or having a conversation with another? Maybe instead of making eye contact with a person while sharing a story you find yourself staring at an object in the distance. There is a reason for this. Where we look affects how we feel. Our eyes are connected to the deepest part of our brain, called the limbic system, where traumas and emotions are stored. The brain is not the only place where memories and emotions are stored. Emotions and memories are also stored in our bodies, and when left unprocessed they will continue to be triggered again and again through out our lives. We may think that because we "left" these overwhelming memories and emotions in the past, and no longer dwell on them consciously, that they are no longer affecting us. However, just because we choose to distract ourselves from them does not mean they aren't affecting us. Most people are not consciously aware that their thoughts and behaviors today stem from stored emotions and experiences of the past that have altered their brain. These stored emotions and physical sensations show up as disruptive physical, mental, and emotional reactions in the present.
During the brainspotting process the practitioner attunes to the client and helps them locate a significant spot in their visual field that's connected to their trauma, overwhelming emotion, or limiting belief by observing subtle reflexive signals. These signals may appear through a reaction in the client's eyes, face, or body. Once the spot is identified the client holds their gaze on this area. Their brain is then able to scan their inner environment and retrieve unprocessed trauma and emotions in the brain-body. With the practitioner's support, the client simply observes the sensations in their body and notices any thoughts or images that may arise. Healing begins to occur immediately within the unconscious. This experience gives their brain and body the time and space it needs to process these traumas or overwhelming emotions and heal itself. The brain-body continues to heal itself up to 48 hours after the session. Clients will surprisingly find that experiences and situations that once triggered them no longer cause a strong emotional reaction within themselves. Their brain-body was able to reprocess and rewire itself desensitizing their system to what was once an overwhelming trigger.
Brainspotting is not only useful for alleviating trauma. Brainspotting is beneficial for accessing all aspects of ourselves including creative expression. Brainspotting can help enhance sports performance, acting abilities, singing talents, writing, etc.
Often times people avoid going to therapy because they don't want to talk about their feelings or rehash the details of overwhelming experiences from their past. A unique aspect of the brainspotting tool is that it is not necessary for the client to talk about their feelings and experiences in order for healing to occur. The healing occurs with this powerful form of mindfulness. In fact some people spend years in talk therapy with little improvements when it comes to truly desensitizing their system from emotional triggers and find themselves experiencing true healing in just a few sessions of brainspotting. Everyone's results are different. Some clients may experience healing in one session, and for others it may take up to 8 session for transformative results. No matter the length, clients can expect deep and rapid healing.
